LLAMA Webinars are a Big Hit!

freuland| November 17, 2009 4:00 pm

LLAMA experienced huge success with its foray into the world of online continuing education. In October and November, well-known library consultant Pat Wagner presented a series of three webinars for LLAMA that were geared toward library deans, directors and top-level managers. Based on evaluation surveys, we estimate that these three webinars reached more than 700 people!
On Oct. 21, “The Executive-Decision Maker’s Secret Weapon – How You Can Make Better Choices with the Use of Graphic Models” had 58 registrants and was viewed by 200-300 people. This success prompted us to market the next two webinars to a broader audience of ALA members, resulting in more than 70 people registering for both “Learn the Supervisor’s Balancing Act – How You Can Bring Out the Best in Your Top People Without Micromanagement” on Nov. 3 and “Make Your Library Dreams Come True – How to Use Project Management Techniques to Write a Strategic Plan” on Nov. 16. Participants were encouraged to have multiple viewers at their sites.
Plans are already underway to make recorded versions of these popular programs available and to develop additional webinars on other topics very soon.

LLAMA Institutes in Boston

freuland| November 12, 2009 2:21 pm

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) will present two institutes at the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association (ALA) on Fri., Jan. 15, 2010 in Boston.

Julie Todaro, an educator, trainer and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in library and information environments will present “Supervisory Training.” This program will focus on topics critical to the success of current and aspiring library leaders and managers, including: Supervision without micromanagement; Positive reinforcement and workplace coaching; and Evaluation, discipline and termination. Participants will have the option to continue their learning through an online communication forum and special online courses designed to share the lessons learned, and their application to real-life situations.

Bill Sannwald, faculty member of the Graduate School of Business at San Diego State University and a former director of the San Diego Public Library, will present “The Complex Edifice.” This one-day workshop will provide the tools needed to evaluate a library’s existing capital facilities and determine what improvements may be needed. Case studies from recent library projects will illustrate new construction and alternatives including remodeling, renovation and expansion. Learning objectives include: building a team to determine library needs and serve as advocates for the project; selecting architects and engineers; understanding technology needs and building requirements; and managing post-occupancy evaluation.
Online registration is available at http://www.ala.org/ala/conferencesevents/upcoming/midwinter/2010/index.cfm (please register for the meeting and select only the events you would like to attend.)

LL&M Seeks Associate Editor Applications

kward| November 10, 2009 3:59 pm

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) seeks an experienced writer or editor to assist in the production and eventually take over as editor of LLAMA’s quarterly journal, Library Leadership & Management (LL&M).  Presently the journal is operating with a co-editorship model that is working quite well, and may be a model for a new approach to producing content for LL&M.  Applications for a shared editorship role are encouraged.

With the Winter 2010 issue, LL&M is transitioning from a print and electronic model to a web-only publication.  We anticipate that the next several years will offer opportunities for the journal to grow in new directions, employ more graphics, and the future possibility for media and interactivity.  The associate editor will be responsible for working closely with the editor in developing and producing each issue and will establish relationships with the Publications Editorial Advisory Board, LLAMA Executive Board, and LLAMA Section and Committee chairs.  This will include producing and editing content, identifying appropriate topics for publication, and assisting authors in developing manuscripts.   More detailed responsibilities are in a public document on ALA Connect, titled LL&M Associate Editor Expectations http://connect.ala.org/node/84638.  Submissions to the journal are invited, accepted, reviewed, and chosen by the editor assisted by the associate editor.

After a two-year term as associate editor, the incumbent will take over duties as editor for two years (2013 – 2014).  The associate editor serves as an ex-officio member of the LLAMA Board of Directors and the Publications Editorial Advisory Board. The first issue for which the newly appointed associate editor will share responsibility will be volume 26, no. 1.

Applicants must be LLAMA members and have experience within ALA.   They are expected to have  knowledge of LLAMA and its goals, have an interest in and knowledge of leadership issues relevant to libraries, and a familiarity with management and leadership literature in general.  Applicants must have written and published in a print or electronic environment and/or have demonstrated editorial experience.  Applicants should have familiarity with technological resources, such as blogs, social websites, and content management systems, as well as knowledge of emerging technologies in publishing.  An understanding of working within the context of a complex organization and balancing competing priorities will be an asset for the successful candidate.

The successful candidate must make a four-year commitment to attend ALA Midwinter and Annual Conference meetings, with emphasis on attending LLAMA section and committee meetings. A stipend up to $1,500 annually will be provided to cover documented travel and/or editorial expenses.  Conference registration costs will be covered as well.

Applicants should submit a resume and cover letter summarizing their editorial philosophy, two to four samples of written work or editorial activities, and three letters of reference addressing their qualifications.  In case of co-editorship applications, a single cover letter with individual resumes, writing samples, and letters of reference should be sent, with one individual identified as the primary contact.  Materials should be sent in electronic form to: Kerry Ward, LLAMA Executive Director at kward@ala.org.  The deadline for application is May 1, 2010. Finalists will be interviewed at the 2010 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

Volunteer for an ALA Committee

kward| 3:54 pm

If you are interesting in an ALA committee, please contact LLAMA President-elect at Gail.Kennedy@uky.edu.

Dear Colleagues:

When I ran for ALA President, I pledged to provide members who want to play a meaningful role in ALA the opportunity to do so. I am asking for your help in making this promise a reality.

One of the most important responsibilities I will undertake as ALA President-elect is to make appointments to the ALA and Council committees in collaboration with the Committee on Appointments (COA) and the Committee on Committees (COC).

To ensure diversity on all ALA and Council committees, I am seeking ALA members who represent racial and ethnic diversity; a variety of types and sizes of libraries, areas of the country, and work experience; and experience in participating in ALA.  In addition (and importantly), one of my goals this year is to encourage the involvement of newer members, members previously not active, and active members who have never been formally appointed to serve on committees.  I would especially appreciate your forwarding to me the names of those who are new to ALA and to the profession so I can consider them for appointment as committee members or interns.

Serving on an ALA or Council committee provides members with leadership training, networking opportunities, and experience in working on specific association topics.  I know that, as a member-leader, you have a broad knowledge of the kinds of people I am looking for.  Therefore, I would be grateful for your help in encouraging interested member-volunteers who would be good choices for appointment to serve on the committees listed here:

Accreditation; American Libraries Advisory; Awards; Budget Analysis and Review; Chapter Relations; Conference; Constitution and Bylaws; Council Orientation; Diversity; Education; Election; Human Resource Development and Recruitment Advisory; Information Technology Policy Advisory; Intellectual Freedom; International Relations; Legislation; Library Advocacy; Literacy; Literacy and Outreach Services Advisory; Membership; Membership Meetings; Organization; Policy Monitoring (current Council members only); Professional Ethics; Public and Cultural Programs Advisory; Public Awareness; Publishing; Research and Statistics; Resolutions; Rural Native and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds; Scholarships and Study Grants; Status of Women in Librarianship; Training, Orientation and Leadership Development; Website Advisory; ALA-Children*s Book Council (Joint Committee); ALA-Association of American Publishers (Joint Committee); and the ALA-Society of American Archivists/American Association of Museums (Joint Committee).

Anyone who would like to serve on one of the above committees must complete the committee volunteer form available at http://tinyurl.com/ybpgsm9.  The deadline for completing the ALA committee volunteer form is Friday, December 4, 2009.

I will also be organizing a number of task forces for my Presidential year to explore ways in which we can continue to transform the association for the 21st century.  Individuals who are not appointed to a committee will have the opportunity to be tapped for one of these groups.

LLAMA Announces Fall Webinar Series for Library Leaders

freuland| September 29, 2009 3:45 pm

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) announced today a line-up of three interactive webinars designed to meet the needs of experienced leaders and managers at the dean, director, department head and branch manager level. Each of the 60-90 minute programs will feature library consultant Pat Wagner of Pattern Research.

“These short webinars provide materials drawn from many sources and offer an interdisciplinary approach to leadership topics with material from outside the library world that can help participants solve complex problems. Emphasis is on practical applications rather than academic models – how-to leadership above the basics that are provided in many leadership institutes,” said Ms. Wagner.

the Use of Graphic Models

Looking For Your Story

admin| September 10, 2009 8:44 pm

The Financial Management Committee from ALA LLAMA’s Library Organization and Management Section, is working on a follow-up article to Shift Happens: Aligning Financial Decisions with Strategic Directions.  Shift Happens was presented at the ALA 2008 Annual Conference and focused on how the change in financial and economic factors can influence strategic plans and directions.  This of course was prepared and presented prior to the economic downturn that was just occurring at that time but has since had major impact on library budgets across the country.

The committee is interested in submitting an updated article to LL&M Magazine and Jane Duffy and I have been working on some updates.  We were hoping that some of you would share some stories with regard to how the national economic crisis affected longer term planning.  We’d like to include some annotated discussions or experiences in this article.  We are specifically looking for impact, that through short term reactions to funding dilemmas  also caused a change to strategic goals and/or missions from an organizational point of view.

Anyone who shares a story that we use along with our research will be recognized in the article.  Please send an email to me at macrumpt@uncg.edu and/or include an attachment of your thoughts and experiences.

Thanks for sharing,
Mike Crumpton and Jane Duffy
