LLAMA Announces Fall Webinar Series for Library Leaders
freuland| September 29, 2009 3:45 pmThe Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) announced today a line-up of three interactive webinars designed to meet the needs of experienced leaders and managers at the dean, director, department head and branch manager level. Each of the 60-90 minute programs will feature library consultant Pat Wagner of Pattern Research.
“These short webinars provide materials drawn from many sources and offer an interdisciplinary approach to leadership topics with material from outside the library world that can help participants solve complex problems. Emphasis is on practical applications rather than academic models – how-to leadership above the basics that are provided in many leadership institutes,” said Ms. Wagner.
“The Executive-Decision Maker’s Secret Weapon – How You Can Make Better Choices with
the Use of Graphic Models,” Wed, Oct 21, 2:00-3:30 pm, Central Time.
“Learn the Supervisor’s Balancing Act – How You Can Bring Out the Best in Your Top
People Without Micromanagement,” Tues, Nov 3, 2:00-3:30 pm, CT
“Make Your Library Dreams Come True –
How You Can Use Project Management Techniques to Write a Strategic Plan,” Mon., Nov.16, 2:00-3:30 pm, CT
Registration for each webinar is $39 for LLAMA members and $49 for all others.

Looking For Your Story
admin| September 10, 2009 8:44 pmThe Financial Management Committee from ALA LLAMA’s Library Organization and Management Section, is working on a follow-up article to Shift Happens: Aligning Financial Decisions with Strategic Directions. Shift Happens was presented at the ALA 2008 Annual Conference and focused on how the change in financial and economic factors can influence strategic plans and directions. This of course was prepared and presented prior to the economic downturn that was just occurring at that time but has since had major impact on library budgets across the country.
The committee is interested in submitting an updated article to LL&M Magazine and Jane Duffy and I have been working on some updates. We were hoping that some of you would share some stories with regard to how the national economic crisis affected longer term planning. We’d like to include some annotated discussions or experiences in this article. We are specifically looking for impact, that through short term reactions to funding dilemmas also caused a change to strategic goals and/or missions from an organizational point of view.
Anyone who shares a story that we use along with our research will be recognized in the article. Please send an email to me at macrumpt@uncg.edu and/or include an attachment of your thoughts and experiences.
Thanks for sharing,
Mike Crumpton and Jane Duffy

LLAMA seeks John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awards entries
freuland| August 14, 2009 11:56 amEntries for the 63rd John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award are being accepted now through Dec. 4 by the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA).
Inaugurated in 1946, the John Cotton Dana Award honors outstanding library public relations programs that support a specific project, goal or activity, or a sustained, ongoing program (e.g. the promotion of a summer reading program, a year-long centennial celebration, fundraising for a new college library, an awareness campaign or an innovative partnership in the community). Winning entries receive $5,000 for their organizations, courtesy of the award’s sponsor, the H.W. Wilson Company.
“We encourage all libraries regardless of their size or budget to consider applying for the John Cotton Dana Award. Wonderful things are happening across this Country and internationally that should be shared with everyone,” said Linda Holtslander, chair of LLAMA’s John Cotton Dana Committee. “Campaigns that win this prestigious award are those that implement a thoroughly creative plan that communicates the many valuable services and programs provided by libraries to meet the increasing needs of their customers.”
The contest is open to all libraries and agencies that promote library service. Entries can be for calendar year 2009 (January-December), school year 2008-2010 (Fall-Spring) or any special project that ends in 2009.
For an entry form, checklist, guidelines and tips, visit the H.W. Wilson web site at http://www.hwwilson.com/jcdawards/nw_jcd.htm
For examples of the 2009 winning entries, visit http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/llama/committees/publicrelations/index.cfm

An icon in the library community for more than 100 years, H.W. Wilson (www.hwwilson.com) is dedicated to providing the highest-quality web and print resources in the world. H.W. Wilson products are familiar to generations of library users as standard tools in college, public, school, and professional libraries worldwide.

ALA Plans Changes to Handbook of Organization
kward| July 21, 2009 9:35 amFor the 2009/2010 membership year, the ALA Handbook of Organization will not be produced in a print, paper format. There will also not be a PDF version online, as a substantial part of the cost of the Handbook is the preparation of the files to prepare the “typeset” committee information pages which form the basis for the PDF version as is currently online.
Recognizing that the Handbook serves two general purposes—record of the organization and guide to its activities and policies—two versions of Handbook information will be prepared:
1) Online, web-based Handbook information pages
2) Print copies of selected web pages, plus a report produced from iMIS of all committee rosters, to be bound and kept in the ALA Library and Archives (iMIS is the ALA membership management system).
Online Handbook of Organization
The Online Handbook will consist of an introductory page, plus a table of contents consisting of links to the elements of the Handbook, which will be resident elsewhere on the ALA website. The following outline is for the current Table of Contents; the actual sequence and terms may vary slightly.
Quick Reference
Ways to Get Involved in ALA
Membership Categories and forms
ALA Ahead to 2010 Strategic Plan

Honorary Members — link to up to date page
ALA Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, and Executive Directors – page to be created
Past Conferences, 1876–2008 – page being created
American Library Association Periodicals page
Using online information for the reference materials will ensure that each page is up-to-date, not just at printing, but whenever an edit is needed, due to an action of Council, a periodical price change, etc. Each page linked to the Handbook will be marked with a “pod” providing one-click access back to the Handbook table of contents.
Roster information
Roster information will be made available, not through the PDF output of the traditional Handbook pages, but rather on a committee by committee basis. The Web Editorial Board has defined a Committee page template, which includes a heading for the roster, which will be generated from iMIS, using the already established code. The public view of the roster will include only name and committee position; the member view of the roster will include full roster information.
This portion of the Online Handbook will only be as good as the contributing units make it; if the committee page is not prepared, its roster will not be available for consultation. However, members may request from the staff liaison for each and every committee or other unit of organization a roster of current members.
